Greetings!
When I visit schools and libraries, I tell the children that I’m a very lucky person because my job lets me do the things I really love to do: write stories, make pictures, and visit kids! As a writer and illustrator of more than 20 picture books, I get excited about ideas and creativity. When I present programs for children, I get a chance to share my excitement with them. Over the years, I have visited children in over 100 schools (!).

Program Preview
I can present four 1-hour programs per day to groups of up to sixty children per group. The hour is packed with energy and active participation, and every child has an opportunity to “star.” Using props, artwork, press sheets, word cards, puppets and more, the programs cover creativity, imagination, ideas, writing, illustrating, concepts, stories, skits, and how books are made. Each program is tailored to the age/grade level of the students. I have programs for Kindergarten through 6th grade, although I am most often asked to visit K-3.

I bring LOTS of materials and props, so if at all possible I prefer to stay in one place for the day—library, art room, a classroom, or whatever space you can manage. I know this isn't always possible, but it's great if it can be arranged. All I need is a small table and enough space for five or six students at a time to be up front with me and move around a little bit. Students in the “audience” will be fine sitting on the floor; teachers may want chairs.

My fee (2005-06) is $750. per day in Maine, and $950. per day out of state. Travel expenses, if necessary, are additional. Please contact me if you have any questions.

Having a Book Sale
I have found that children, parents, and teachers are eager to have the opportunity to purchase books by visiting authors. Children feel a special connection to a book when they have met its creator. Schools often arrange for a book sale to help pay for the program. Books can be ordered directly from the publishers at significant discount, and unsold books are fully returnable. Or, you might want to make arrangements through your local bookstore. Either way, early planning is encouraged.

Some schools have sent home book order forms in advance of my visit. As a parent, I know I would be reluctant to order picture books sight-unseen. If possible, you might want to select single copies of several titles ahead of time to display at a PTA event or Open House, so that parents can preview the books before ordering. If books arrive in time for my visit, I am happy to sign them at lunch time, on a break, or after school. ( I refrain from signing books in classrooms, since those children who have not purchased books may feel left out.) I can also sign bookplates if you would rather have your book sale after my visit.

If your school is within a reasonable drive for me, you might want to have an evening book sale event at a later date. Some schools have combined this with a student art display, a literacy night, and even an ice cream social. I’m happy to speak briefly to families, and to sign books.

If you are arranging a book sale through your local bookstore, be sure to let them know as far in advance as possible. If you wish to order directly from the publishers, I recommend ordering 6-8 weeks in advance. I can email you the contact information. School discounts are generally 30-40%. You may sell the books for whatever price you like. Some schools pass part of the discount on to their students; others use the profits to fund library programs or future author visits. Please let me know if you have any problems with ordering.

Questions?
In addition to school visits, I also present programs at libraries, book festivals, conferences and other events. If you have any questions, or would like references or any additional information, please contact me at frogsongstudio@yahoo.com.
